Grand Cliff Top Walk Blue Mountains
The Grand Cliff Top Walk spans the northern edge of the Jamison Valley, offering a continuous 19-kilometre trail that links Wentworth Falls, Leura, and Katoomba. As a multi-day journey or a series of shorter excursions, this walk distils much of what makes the Blue Mountains exceptional: sheer sandstone cliffs, ancient bushland, an abundance of lookouts, and the ongoing influence of both European and Aboriginal histories.

Route Overview
Beginning at Wilson Park in Wentworth Falls, here: w3w.co/perfectly.cutter.powerhouse the trail follows a network of realigned heritage tracks. Progressing west, you meet Darwins Walk, Undercliff and Overcliff tracks, and the Valley of the Waters. The route threads its way through ferns and across boardwalks, passing lookouts above plunging waterfalls such as Empress, Sylvia, and Wentworth Falls. Side tracks tempt the curious toward views like Fletchers Lookout and Queen Victoria Lookout.
Gordon Falls Reserve, Leura, here: w3w.co/adjusts.reassure.kindly operates as a natural midpoint. Refuelling in the village is effortless, with cafes and bakeries located near the trail. After Leura Cascades, the walk merges with segments of the Prince Henry Cliff Walk, offering glimpses over Katoomba Falls and the Three Sisters outcrop before concluding near Scenic World in Katoomba, here: w3w.co/handing.sleeveless.juggles.
Key Features
-
Lookouts and Cascades: Frequent outcrops deliver clear views across the valley. Notable highlights include the dramatic drop of Wentworth Falls, the layered pools of Leura Cascades, and the classic profile of the Three Sisters.
-
Flora and Fauna: The escarpment hosts a diversity of plant communities, including woodlands punctuated by scribbly gum and banksia. Birdlife is rich; expect to see yellow-tailed black cockatoos (Wumbarrung) and, occasionally, superb lyrebirds foraging in the understorey.
-
Heritage: Sections of the pathway have been walked for generations. Hand-built stonework along the tracks is evidence of early tourism and the continuing stewardship by both local communities and the traditional Gundungurra custodians.
Logistics
-
Distance: 19 km, best completed over two days, with an overnight stay in Leura.
-
Grade: Considered a moderate (Grade 3) trail due to some uneven surfaces and stair sections, though navigation is made straightforward by clear waymarking featuring the black cockatoo motif.
-
Transport: Both trailheads—Wentworth Falls and Katoomba—are accessible by rail from Sydney. Leura also connects easily via public transport.
-
Seasonality: Conditions in the Blue Mountains can change quickly; check for track closures, especially following rain, before departure.
Walking Experience
The initial section is shaped by the sound of running water and the close proximity of scenery—cliffs, undercut ledges, and cool forests. Each lookout reveals another layer of the valley. The journey often moves at ridge-top elevation, so exposure to wind and weather is a factor. The walk’s structure allows for tight itineraries or extended stops, letting walkers adapt according to ability and interest.
Interpreting signs explain the cultural and geological stories of the area. Many side tracks invite additional exploration for those with time and energy.
Cultural Connections
The walk traverses Gundungurra Country, respecting its significance and the longstanding relationship between people and land here. Markers and interpretive material draw walkers’ attention to Indigenous connections, especially the role of the yellow-tailed black cockatoo, which is both a symbolic and ecological presence.
The Grand Cliff Top Walk encapsulates much of the Blue Mountains ethos: visible geology, biodiversity, a sense of layered history, and lingering quiet. For those seeking a blend of continuous walking, rich scenery, and contact with villages, it provides a coherent and well-marked experience through one of eastern Australia’s defining landscapes.
