Electric Bike Hire is coming to Katoomba, with a twist. This service is NOTHING like the hire bike businesses in Sydney.
Back on 21st March 2023, we shared information on a proposal where BMCC councilors agreed to enter a license agreement with BYKKO a successful family-owned EV Bike Hire company based in Newcastle.
π§ππ ππππππ₯ππ‘ππ: Before jumping to conclusions about bikes littering the mountains and causing problems, it’s important to understand that the BYKKO system operates on a “station-based” model. This means that users are charged for bike rental until they return the bike to the station where they initially rented it. If a user abandons a bike, charges will persist until the bike is retrieved and returned. Consequently, neglecting to return bikes can result in a very costly ride.
The bikes have GPS trackers and IoT sensors that will track movement and impact (if the bike fell off or hit something).
The e-bike is securely locked at the station and the battery is charged while the bike is docked.
Also, the hiring system is managed by a local licensee thereby ensuring the hire experience is the best possible.
ππ’πππ§ππ’π‘π¦: The first four locations are Echo Point/Lilianfels Park Site, Katoomba Kiosk, Civic Centre, and Scenic World. Approvals are in place for locations, and the final details, including the launch date to be confirmed in the coming months. BYKKO successfully runs similar EV hire bike systems and other NSW locations.
πππ¦π§ππ‘ππ: The battery range is up to 70 km depending on the level of usage. The battery is recharged every time the bike is docked back at the docking station. If the battery is completely flat, it will take up to 4 hours to be fully recharged.
π’π£π£π’π₯π§π¨π‘ππ§π¬: BYKKO is now looking for local independent operators to partner with us to run the Katoomba bike share program. We could even explore the idea of a community-owned program if there is strong interest in this specific area.
