{"id":13406,"date":"2022-02-01T12:43:49","date_gmt":"2022-02-01T01:43:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.askroz.com.au\/blog\/?p=13406"},"modified":"2023-04-01T16:00:56","modified_gmt":"2023-04-01T05:00:56","slug":"tribute-to-explorers-hewn-out-of-blackheath-cliff-face","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.askroz.com.au\/blog\/tribute-to-explorers-hewn-out-of-blackheath-cliff-face\/","title":{"rendered":"Tribute to explorers hewn out of Blackheath cliff face"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong>FROM: Sunday Telegraph, 17th May, 1959 &#8211; Full transcript<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Blue Mountains City Council is supporting a Sydney man\u2019s scheme for a huge rock tableau to be sculptured on a cliff face at Govett\u2019s Leap, Blackheath.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The cliff face, opposite Govett\u2019s Leap lookout, is 200ft long and 100ft deep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Sculptors would hew from the rock face huge relief figures of explorers Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth, the first white men to conquer the Blue Mountains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Using pneumatic drills and gelignite charges, sculptors and workmen would work on platforms hung hundreds of feet above the Grose Valley.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askroz.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-01-at-3.27.28-pm.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13412\" src=\"https:\/\/www.askroz.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-01-at-3.27.28-pm.png\" alt=\"Tribute to explorers hewn out of cliff face\" width=\"1438\" height=\"1218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.askroz.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-01-at-3.27.28-pm.png 1438w, https:\/\/www.askroz.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-01-at-3.27.28-pm-300x254.png 300w, https:\/\/www.askroz.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-01-at-3.27.28-pm-1024x867.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.askroz.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-01-at-3.27.28-pm-768x651.png 768w, https:\/\/www.askroz.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-01-at-3.27.28-pm-660x559.png 660w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1438px) 100vw, 1438px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Linked with the tableau idea are plans to develop:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">A large landscape garden and driveway dedicated to all Australian explorers at the top of the cliff.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">A music shell seating 2000 people in a natural amphitheatre overlooking the valley.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">A luxury tourist hotel built near the present main lookout at Govett\u2019s Leap.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Helicopter trips for tourists over the tableau and Grose Valley.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Support by Council<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Govett\u2019s Leap, one of the Blue Mountains\u2019 most spectacular scenic attractions, was named after surveyor William Govett, who discovered a waterfall there in 1831.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Sydney publisher Mr. Oswald Ziegler, the scheme\u2019s promoter, said the idea for the tableau came to him while he was touring the Blue Mountains on research for a new book.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2018I put my scheme to Blue Mountains City Council and won its whole-hearted support,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe Council\u2019s engineer examined the cliff face and said it was sandstone &#8211; probably ideal of sculpturing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A committee of Australia\u2019s top sculptors and artists would be formed to design and execute the tableau, Mr Ziegler said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Mr. Hal Missingham, was enthusiastic about the tableau, and sculptor Lyndon Dadswell had prepared a suggested design for the figures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The tableau probably would take 18 months to two years to finish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>\u201cBig Tourist attraction\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mr. Ziegler said: \u201cThe site suggested for the tourist hotel is near the main lookout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Blue Mountains City Council approached the National Park Trust, which approved a hotel of suitable design being built there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mr. Ziegler said the question of financing the scheme had not yet been discussed because plans still were being developed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Blue Mountains Mayor (Ald. A.F.C.
