eMAG IS GREAT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
According to the NSW Environment & Heritage, at it’s most efficient level, it takes about 25 litres of water to produce 1 kg of copy paper, so with quality tourism publications using more refined and coated paper, water usage would be significantly higher.
Additionally, the production of 1 tonne of copy paper produces 2,600kg of greenhouse gases, which is the equivalent of 6 months of a car’s exhaust. Dumping paper in landfill adds methane to the atmosphere as it decomposes, with 20 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide.
To produce 1,000 kg of copy paper requires about 7,600 kWh of electricity.
Excluding tourism brochures, the Blue Mountains alone produces 5 tourist magazines and 2 newspapers and that represents approximately 50,000kg per month in paper weight, which required about 1,250,000 litres of water per month.
About 5 kg wood is required to produce 1kg fibre and 1.1kg fibre required to produce 1kg paper. That translates into about 250,000kg of wood being needed to produce the Blue Mountains 50,000kg per month in paper weight.
To put that into simple terms, each year the paper needed for Blue Mountains’ publications consumes the equivalent of 6 Olympic Pools of water and has the equivalent weight of 47 Blue Mountains Explorer Buses in paper.
The life span of tourism magazines and brochures can be as little as a few minutes, whereas, the digital format in Ask Roz eMag uses up no significant resources and has an indefinite life. The Ask Roz eMag is a great example of how you create your own content and enjoy it digitally with minimal impact on the environment.
While we may never became a paperless society, the more users who adopt a digital platform, such as Ask Roz, will represent considerable savings to the environment.
